About
About Pliant Energy Systems
Pliant Energy Systems has developed an extraordinary new engineering paradigm for harnessing the energy of flowing fluid, and for making fluid flow with as little energy as possible. All the technologies emerging from this paradigm concern blade-less interactions with fluid. For example, undulating surfaces instead of spinning propellers, and undulating surfaces instead of spinning turbines.
These technologies have direct applications in defense, marine propulsion, ocean exploration, renewable energy and water. Some applications are in very large markets with the potential to solve humanitarian and planetary problems not fully addressed by established technologies. These include creating electricity from streams and rivers and supplying clean water for drinking and irrigation in developing regions of the world.
Pliant has an IP base of twenty two patents to date, know-how and closely-held trade secrets. Funding has streamed through Federal and State grants and Federal contracts. R&D has been executed through a program combining thousands of hours of numerical modeling with lab testing and prototype builds. The most notable builds to date are Velox and C-Ray, agile swimming robots that can transition from water to land, and travel over sand, snow and ice, funded in part by the United States Office of Naval Research.
